CCC # 2

Welcome to the second edition of Carole’s Creative Commotion! A couple of months ago, when Karen & I were putting our heads together, trying to come up with what has become CCC, she asked me to pick a number between 1 and 31. Since my favorite number[1] wasn’t available, I went with another number I like quite a lot: 18. Karen then informed me that the 18th of each month would become “my” day on the YNS blog. She never asked why I picked 18, and I’ve never told her. Until now.

It’s not a terribly complex: my birthday is on September 18th. In other words: Happy Birthday to ME!!!

I don’t know about you, but I don’t receive a ton of birthday cards. I get a few each year from my stampy friends, but a lot of ‘em are like me – they make cards, but getting them actually sent off in time for a birthday… well, that requires an entirely different skill set. Because of my own time management/organizational issues, I more than understand why my mailbox doesn’t overflow[2].

Most of the time, my birthday gifts or acknowledgments come with a variation on this theme: “There’s no way I can possibly give you a card that compares to the ones you make. So why bother?!” Seriously, I’ve received two gifts (a fabulous red purse from my sister-in-law and a gift certificate for a massage from a dear friend) already[3] with those very words scrawled on note cards! I totally get that. I wouldn’t give a wood-worker a figure I whittled or a potter my attempt at a vase or ashtray. Even though cards are much more ubiquitous than your average craft item, I imagine it must feel just as strange to give a card to a stamper if papercrafts aren’t in your wheelhouse.

Instead of bemoaning my fate, I’ve decided to take matters into my own hands and make my own birthday card, just for me. Wanna see it? Okay, twist my arm…

I can tell you unequivocally that this card is 100% me, and at the risk of sounding egotistical[4], I’ve gotta tell you: I love it! Let me count the ways:

1. I used the adorable Bubbly Fun Fhiona image. There are few things in life I like better than a nice warm-to-hot bubble bath. Showers are utilitarian; baths are comforting. There’s something almost primal about a bath, like being a child once more, enveloped in the warmth of being taken care of (instead of being the caretaker, as most of us are in adulthood). I think that’s subconsciously a reason there are so many images of girls in bathtubs in the stamping industry. And, not surprisingly, I think I own most of those images! One can never have too many bathing stamps, in my humble opinion, and this one of sweet Fhiona? Quite possibly the cutest of ‘em all.

2. The pink and green color scheme. As articulated in The Official Preppy Handbook[5], pink and green is the preppiest of color combos, and therefore near and dear to my preppy little heart.

3. See the pink bathtub and pink gingham “wallpaper” in “my” bathroom?

(Because this card is for me, I’m working off the assumption that’s me in the tub, not Fhiona…) I lived in several different homes when I was growing up, but the house my family was in for the longest and that I remember best had a bathroom with a pink tub and sink, a pink tiled floor, and wallpaper with a repeating pink metallic cherubs. I LOVED THAT BATHROOM! And I am determined to have another pink bathroom before I die[6].

4. The patterned paper: gingham & paisley. Gingham + paisley = me to a T. As I type that, I’m thinking to myself “Oooh… ‘Gingham & Paisley’… that would be a good name for a blog.” THAT’S how much I love gingham and paisley, in anything. Particularly patterned paper and shirts. Gingham and paisley are my go-to prints; never out of style and never too trendy – always just right.

5. I love ribbon, and this particular ribbon is by one of my very favorite companies, Doodlebug Designs. Everything Doodlebug puts their name on – from paper to embellishments to ribbon – delights me. Karen and I share this love for Doodlebug, and fortunately you can find lots of Doodlebug products in the YNS store.

6. Though there are several layers on this card, it’s doesn’t have a whole lot of ‘extras’. Sure, there’s a little bling (a girl’s gotta have a little bling, don’t you know, and if she can have pearls bubbling out of her tub, I say “Why not?”), but it isn’t embellished within an inch of its life. I wouldn’t necessarily consider myself a ‘clean and simple’ stamper, but I’m also not terribly complicated. I like a little depth and dimension, some texture, and a doodad or two, but then I’m done. Not exactly sure what one might call my style, but I think this card is representative of it.

7. Finally, if I were to show you the inside of my card, you would see it’s blank. I know it’s popular among many stampers these days to decorate the inside of their cards. While that’s pretty to look at on blogs, I find it highly impractical. A decorated card interior leaves me with little room to actually write a message to the recipient. As you might have noticed by the length of this blog post, I’m a bit too chatty for merely “Love, Carole.”

So tell me: if you were to make a card just for you, what would it look like? What kind of image would you use? What would your color scheme be? How would it be embellished? What would it need to feature to scream “This Is ME!” Leave a comment on this post and tell me all about it. If you do so by September 25th (when Karen will draw a random winner), you’ll be eligible to win this month’s CCC Prize Package, a Bubbly Fun Fhiona stamp and a package of Doodlebug Birthday Celebration Boutique Brads. Good stuff, no? 🙂

Before I leave you, I’ll let you in on a little secret: you don’t need to wait for your birthday to make a card just for you. If you feel like you need an excuse to indulge yourself in this way, I’ve got one for you: you can use MY birthday as your reason. Nothing would make me happier on my special day than to envision you creating something you love, just for you.

See you next month on the 18th!

xo, Carole

Footnotes

[1] My favorite number is 96. Why? Well, Truman (my oldest son) was born in 1996, and Carter (my youngest son) was born on September 6th. Looking at it from that perspective, how could 96 NOT be my favorite number? 🙂

[2] Though I don’t expect a card in the mail, I DO expect all of my friends – whether I’ve met them or not – to send vibrational messages to the Universe, giving thanks and glad tidings that I was born and that they’ve been fortunate enough to cross my path. At a minimum, this message should be delivered on my birthday, but you’re welcome to send it as often as you like. I’ve heard that good things happen to those who send it daily…

[3] The reason I say ‘already’ is that I’m actually writing this while flying the friendly skies on Thursday afternoon. I’m on my way for a girls’ weekend in Minneapolis with three of my BSFs (Best Stamping Friends), one of whom is new YNS Design Team member, Amy Rohl! 🙂 ScrapFest is taking place at the Mall of America this weekend, and we figured that between that and my birthday, we had two great excuses for getting together for a little shopping, dining, and bonding. There may also be a few beverages sprinkled in the mix…

[4] As if the second footnote hasn’t already put the idea of egotism to rest… 😉

[5] I first read the Official Preppy Handbook in 5th grade, and didn’t realize at the time that it was a satire. As far as influential texts in my life, it ranks right up there with The Bible and The Synonym Finder.

[6] Not that I plan on dying soon. I’m a VERY young 42.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY CAROLE!!! Awesome CCC post! You’ve inspired me to make a card for myself so I’ll share that with everyone later this week! I couldn’t help but laugh at your bathroom comment, I grew up in a house with a purple bathroom suite, a green and a golden yellow – they were so cool! Why are bathrooms so boring these days – white – blah! LOL Have a super fab day!

Happy Birthday Carole and wishes for many more! If this was my card, I would have bubbles up to my chin, a book in my hand and some music playing in the background, maybe some Allan Jackson or Johnny Reid. Hope you have a wonderful day!

Happy Birthday Carole!!! It’s funny as I don’t get many cards either for the same reason. Everyone’s afraid they will look cheap compared to my homemade cards lol. I guess I see the point too.

(Not entering the contest of course but I have to reply) If I were to make a card for myself it would include this EXACT stamp cuz I love to take baths. I just had a giant whirlpool tub installed in my house and I take baths outta control. I’m addicted to LUSH bath products and I can’t stay away from my tub. It’s my other obsession outside of card making.

My color choices would be shades of green. Lights, Darks, etc… Very calming and that’s the colors of my bathroom lol.

Special items on the card would include LOTS of stickles and sparkle. That’s totally me. I’m a girly girl (ashamed to admit lol).

Your card is gorgeous and I too love your ribbon, that’s fabulous. Everything about this card is perfect! Hope you enjoy your birthday!

Lol – wonderful post!!! My card for myself would most definitely include the color aqua mist. It is my favorite color and I convinced my husband to paint our bathroom walls with that color. Our tub, etc. may be white, but the walls are always bright and remind me of Bermuda!

Super cute card, Carole. Your coloring is awesome. And happy birthday from one of your friends who does much better at MAKING the cards than mailing them. 😉 XOXO

Happy Belated Birthday, Carole! I hope you had a WONDERFUL birthday, yesterday! Hahaha…I LOVED every word of this post, you are TOO funny! PS. I like the number 18, too…as my birthday is exactly a month before yours…haha, by this post, one would think YOU’RE the Leo! Also, found it interesting that your younger son, Carter was born September 6th since my good friend’s 5 year old is named Carter, too, and his birthday is September 5th! Anyway, thanks for the laugh!

    Hugs,
    Naomi

I am so glad I stopped by today to read your post! I learned something new! I’m not the only one who makes cards and almost NEVER puts them in the mailbox! LOL Now I don’t feel so bad! haha
What would make a card stand up and scream “Hey, that is totally me!”? Well, something funny/sarcastic/silly. I’m a sarcastic type person who usually finds herself in trouble for her “silliness”. Even my license plate says HAHA. My birthday is October 23rd. So, with that being said, I’m confused – am I a Libra or a Scorpio? hmm..
    Happy Birthday Vibes To You!

Oh no! I forgot to mention what a “ME” card would involve…hmmm…soft colours such as light peachy pink OR soft aqua, cream, and kraft cardstock…a sophisticated image such as a floral image or a sillhouette image…spellbinders to cut-out and sponge the main image in Old Paper ink..then popped up with dimensionals (need dimension!)…ribbon or crocheted lace trim, pearls, and a gorgeous flower embellishment…oooh, and maybe a pearl flourish!

  19. 19

Oh, Carole, you always make me laugh! Happy, happy. Birthday to you! Hope you had a fab weekend! LOVE this card and even better that you made it just for you :). Pink and green are one of my favorite color schemes, too!

Well, how about a Happy Birthday from a total stranger??? Like me!!!

    Happy Birthday. er, belated Birthday.

I don’t think I could do a pink bathroom, but my BCard would definately be all pink. Pink, pink pink.

You’re post and the footnotes are hilarious. My Bday is the 24th, and I think I’ll come back and read this one again.

Happy birthday, Carole! I know it’s belated, but that’s just ME.

A perfect card for me would have to be something humorous or adorable, with bright colors like sunny yellow or turquoise and gotta have glitter or bling! And it would be a bit late – because mine ALWAYS seem to be late. 🙂

    Amy Rohl says:

Happy Birthday to my crazy rockstar BSF!!! Love you!

    Scrapalajen says:

Happy birthday Carole. My card would be green and yellow as I love this color combo! It would contain stickers if made for a child under 3 years or maybe I’ll use my nesties to give it a more stylish look. For embellies, I would use ribbons, buttons, flowers and maybe some bling!

For images, I can use any digi image or stamp not necessarily one that has birthday writen on it because there will be embellishments that would add to it. Maybe a good example would be a fairy or a princess for a girl or a dragon for a boy.

  25. 25

Happy belated Birthday Carole! If I were to give my self a card it would have to have white ink on black card stock with a cute/ugly image!
